Startup Watch: Overjet - Applying AI to Dental X-rays

One of the first and most pervasive applications of AI in medicine was in Radiology. Not surprisingly, now some of the same approaches are being applied to dental radiology.

Overjet is one of the companies in this space. The company has raised over $77M, as of May 2022, by leading investors such as General Catalyst, Insight and others.

Overjet’s FDA-cleared platform detects potential pathologies in radiographs, which is performed automatically, instantly, and accurately to guide Dentists to arrive at precise and accurate diagnostic decisions. Research by PhDs from MIT, dentists from Harvard School of Dental Medicine helped design the essential components of the platform.

The company was founded in 2018 by PhDs from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and dentists from Harvard School of Dental Medicine and incubated at the Harvard Innovation Labs.

The Dental Assist software is used by dentists to automatically measure bone loss to diagnose periodontal disease and by insurance providers to review X-rays submitted alongside dental claims for approval.

Excited to see more innovation coming to this space using the latest advances in computer vision!
